The 6th Manazuru Constant Ballast Contest - 2005

BY KEIKO NAMIKAWA

PHOTOS

15 TFC Members SIGNED UP TO DIVE for their personal best. THERE WERE TWO AIDA JUDGES TO OFFICIATE RESULTS FOR A POSSIBLE JAPANESE RECORD.

It was A rainy day as every year... but not AS cold.

PREPARATIONS STARTED AT 0800HRS IN THE MORNING TOGETHER WITH FOUR MONKEYS AND THEY WERE JOINED BY THE COMPETITORS WHO HELPED WITH BOATS, ROPES AND EVERYTHING ELSE.

WHILE THEY WERE ON THE DIVE I SAT WAITING IN THE BOAT HOUSE IN A LITTLE ROOM WITH A STOVE DOING PAPERWORK.

AFTER THREE HOURS EVERYONE CAME BACK WITH A SMILE. HAVING FINISHED THE COMPETITION SAFELY.

IT WAS PLANNED TO DO A NEW JAPANESE RECORD BUT DURING TRAINING THERE WERE SEVERAL BLACK OUTS AND KAZ DECIDED NOT TO DO ANY RECORD ATTEMPTS.

THE SAFETY WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN DOING A RECORD ESPECIALLY AS A SAFETY DIVER WAS LOST THIS YEAR DURING A COMPETITION.

Special thanks TO Syun Oshima, Tomoko, Okamoto. and Andy.

words by mrs. misuzu hirai

I traveled from Lausanne to Nice with the TGV and I was surprised at the difference of the temperature. Nice was very warm and comfortable. This was my first world championship. I met the competitors of other countries and I had the chance to speak about freediving in Lausanne and Nice. It was a beautiful experience for me. I got excited because I saw top athlete's changing world records. There was an atmosphere of friendliness, and I felt that freediving is loved by everyone in Europe together with the history. I dove to     -52m in this competition. It was my personal best! Thank you for all! I want to dive again with my friends in the beautiful sea of Nice.

words by MS. Masako Ishikawa

This was my first  world competition. I felt very uneasy because I cant speak English or French but my friends from the tfc helped me and so it was ok.

It was also my first trip to Switzerland and my only imaginary connection was chocolate and cheese. My first impression I received was that it is freezing and the pool water temperature was very cold!! It made me feel so low but I started pool training.
I was impressed with the competitors from the other countries how they did their training. There was one crying competitor as she felt it so difficult to hold her breath because of the cold water temperature.

On the competition day my body was shaking when I swam but I made personal best and I was happy again.
When the competition finished, I promised to myself I will do more training because I want to come again next year.

The 5th Manazuru Constant Ballast Contest and National Record Attempts, October 16th, 2004, Japan.

Reported by Junko Kitahama

The Tokyo Freediving Club (TFC) held the 5th Manazuru Constant Ballast Contest and National Record Attempts October 16th, 2004 at Manazuru, Kanagawa, Japan.  The annual contest was opened to everyone who was interested in freediving, and also set to discover new talents by original unique awards.  The contest provided a safety environment with experienced TFC members who were selected National Team members and staff during the Japan Apnea Championships as surface and scuba securities.  Also we held National Record Attempts during the contest.  It was the first time to set up National Record Attempts by the TFC.

Weather was cloudy with no sunshine at that day; visibility 3-5m at surface, 5-10m at –45m and complete darkness. Air temperature was 17C, water temp. 18C at surface and 23C at –45m due to several typhoons, and a little swell.

For the morning session, we set up 3 National Record Attempts, Free Immersion (FI) for Men and Women and Constant Weight without Fin (CNF) for Men.  Both Men’s records were the first trial in Japan.  Record recognition is now pending by AIDA Japan.  For the afternoon session, we had the constant contest with participation of  6 TFC members and 8 new comers.  Most of the new comers had their first experience diving with line and with the security system.  They said with a big smile, “It was the first experience in such a safety environment. It made me comfortable”. The contest was successfully finished with 3 traditional awards and 4 unique awards this year.

4th constant ballast competition

TFC 4TH COMPETITION 2003

Report by Naoya Ozawa & Junko Kitahama.

The Tokyo Freediving Club held the 4th Constant Ballast competition in October 25, 2003. The competition was originally planed for October 26th. However, the typhoon #17 approached Tokyo. Kaz Ichikawa, the shogun of the Tokyo Freediving Club decided to change the date to the day before.

The competition was held under the TFC club rules and not strictly to AIDA Int’l rules. The competition was open to everyone who is interested in freediving and also to discover new talents by unique awards.

The TFC provided the safety diver environment. Japanese top FREEDIVERS supported the event and it was a platform to exchange information about freediving.

The competition was held at our home ground the Mazuru Peninsula in the Kanagawa Prefecture.

The conditions were:

air temperature 19C

water temperature 21C

visibility 15m

no current.

Supporting staff were club members, Kaname Hattori (committee member), Junko Kitahama (committee member), Akira Kanazawa (surface security), Naoya Ozawa (under water photos) and Seiichi Suzuki (under water photos). Kaz was judge for the competition. 16 club members participated.

There was a preset for a maximum depth of –45m and a minimum depth of –8m. The event was under a very relaxed atmosphere. The records (most of them were the personal best) were good and there was no BO and no LMC.

The contest committee presented 5 awards for:

Nikka Morinaga (Best Performance),

Hitoshi Iida (Beautiful Fin-work),

Hiroki Hori (Super Focus),

Sachiko Iizuka (Wonderful Rookie),

Masako Ishiakwa (Kaname Award).

Everybody enjoyed the final diving for this year. After the contest, of course, we had a good time - all night party!

The Tokyo Freediving Cub was founded in 1999. It is one of the oldest freediving clubs in Japan. We have about 40 members, from top FREEDIVERS through dolphin swimming lovers. The TFC is open to everyone who loves the ocean and to communicate to everyone in the world.

See you in Cyprus 2004 – we will be there!
